“We did it, Joe!”

In 2020, Kamala Harris became the highest ranking female elected official in U.S. history, as well as being the first woman, African American, and Asian American vice president. The daughter of immigrants (her mother emigrated to the United States from India and her father from Jamaica), Harris rose to prominence in California politics, first as the state’s attorney general and then as one of its U.S. senators. Harris had campaigned for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, losing to eventual nominee Joseph Biden. In this photo she addressed a victory rally in Wilmington, Delaware—held masked and outdoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic—on November 7, 2020, the day she and Biden were declared the winners of the 2020 presidential election.
