Popeye Versus the Goon

During 1933 and 1934, readers of E. C. Segar’s Popeye comic strip were introduced to the Goons, powerful, mindless servants of the sailor’s nemesis, the horrible Sea Hag. The name was soon applied to violent strikebreakers who patrolled the San Francisco waterfront.
