Colored Women's League of Washington, D.C., c. 1894

Founded in 1892 by registered nurse Sara Iredell, the League is pictured here gathered with husbands and supporters on the steps of Cedar Hill, Frederick Douglass’s home in Anacostia, Washington, D.C. The League’s members, who were dedicated to “racial uplift,” established day nurseries and adult evening schools and worked to improve social conditions in Washington. In 1896, various women’s clubs, including the D.C. League, merged into the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs.
